Comedic Counterstories

This study examines the following question: How do comedians perform their identities through counterstories?

This project focuses on eight stand-up comedy specials available on the Netflix streaming service: Cristela Alonzo’s (2016) Lower Classy, Aziz Ansari’s (2013) Buried Alive, Dave Chappelle’s (2017) The Age of Spin, Maz Jobrani’s (2017) Immigrant, Jen Kirkman’s (2015) I’m Gonna Die Alone (And I Feel Fine), Tracy Morgan’s (2017) Staying Alive, Trevor Noah’s (2013) African American, and Ali Wong’s (2016) Baby Cobra.
